With more than 100 years of age, Diego is no spring chicken but his romantic conquers are the stuff of legend.
About 50 years ago Diego was one of only two males of his species left in the world as these awesome tortoises were facing extinction. In 1976 he was brought from San Diego zoo where he resided back to Galapagos in order to participate in a breeding program in an effort to save the species. Fast forward half a century and the population of these tortoises is as healthy as can be, courtesy of our shy Casanova. It’s estimated that Diego has fathered more than 800 children and that 40% of the current population are his direct descendants.
